5 Wool Classing
An estimation of wool quality by examination of wool fleeces before the wool is presented for sale. It is carried out in a manner to enable buyers to form a fair valuation of the quality of the wool. Wool classing is usually performed on the sheep station or farm. The size of the flock and variations in fleece characters influence the classing. Although the wool is classed in fleece form the valuations of experienced wool classers can be depended upon. (See Tops) -
6 Wool Sorting
Wool fleeces contain several grades of wool. The wool sorter's work consists in selecting portions from successive fleeces which agree substantially in their major characteristics of fineness of fibre, length of staple, crimp, and other features he may discern in the wool and which influence his decisions in sorting the wool into match-ings which can be spun together with satisfactory results. The names given to the various " sorts " isolated by the wool sorter may be in accordance with their subsequent use as warp, weft, knitting, etc. (See Wool Classing) -

8 Wool Quality
In intention wool quality is meant to be an estimation of the probable spinning value of a given lot or sample of wool. The estimation requires skill of a very high order and those who have to buy and sell wool on the sight and feel of samples have developed a surprising soundness of judgment. In the United Kingdom wools are given quality numbers and a 64's quality wool should spin satisfactory yarn as fine as 64's worsted counts. This is not absolute and many factors influence quality estimations, such as fibre fineness, average length of fibres, uniformity of growth or otherwise, e.g., defects or weaknesses caused by drought, illness of the sheep, etc., crimp, waviness, etc. -

12 Wool Washing Machine
A machine for washing raw wool usually arranged with four bowls. Each of these is provided with a pair of squeezing rollers and also rake mechanism for propelling the wool through the liquor towards the outlet end. The constituents of the detergents in the bath are progressively weaker from the first or steeping bowl, to the last or rinsing bowl. 13 Wool Yield
Raw wool in the greasy state contains a great amount of extraneous dirt and grease. Before wool is made into yarn, the dirt and a large proportion of the grease or fat is removed by washing, preceded sometimes by a shaking or dusting operation which shakes out loose dirt. The yield of clean wool varies with the locality where the sheep have been reared, and may be from 45 per cent to 75 per cent of the greasy weight. -

16 Wool Blending, Mechanical
WOOL BLENDING, MECHANICALA tubular rotary spreading device located over the mixing stacks of wool blends. It spreads in rotation the wool and other components of a blend uniformly over the whole floor area of the bin constituting a mixing. It eliminates manual spreading. The spreader is linked up with tubes through which material is pneumatically conveyed from the opening machines to the mixing stack. Four types of combs are used for combing wool. 1. The Holden circular comb with square motion fallers. 2. The Lister circular nip comb with gill box for long wools. 3. The Noble circular comb, the most generally used machine for combing wool and adaptable for long, medium or fine stapled wools. 4. Short fibres abstracted during the process of combing wool. Such material is regarded by the worsted spinner as waste and is sold. It is bought by spinners of woollen yarns and as it is new wool of undamaged though short staple it is a valuable component when suitably blended with other wools, etc. -
19 Wool Washing
The process of cleansing raw wool by a washing process conducted in a large machine generally with four bowls. The most usual detergents are soap and alkali used in various proportions for different wools in a considerable quantity of water. The temperature of the washing liquors is important and might be 120 deg. F. or 130 deg. F. in the first and second bowls with successive lower temperatures in the third and fourth bowls. The impurities removed are considerable, and might be 50 per cent or more of the greasy weight of the wool. -
